Let’s face it; Twitter has become the new judge of what’s hot and what’s not. It tells us more about what people are interested in then trendy magazines do. It gives us the news before the news agencies can. It helps raise money for natural disasters worldwide better than Jerry Lewis ever could. I have been following Sarah Evans, PR guru, since I was in college. Recently, her team scoured the internet, news, books, and everything else they could to come up with the most convincing social media stats. This list is phenomenal and you should hang it up in your office and definitely use it on your next presentation slide.

1. “Social media accounts for one out of every six minutes spent online in US.” (Journalism.co.uk)

2. “Seventy-seven percent report that they use social media to share their love of a show; 65% use it as a platform to help save their favorite shows; and 35% use it to try to introduce new shows to their friends.” (TVGuide.com study via TVNewsCheck.com)

What’s Your Social Media Response Time?

Expion, a Raleigh, N.C.-based social media management software firm, studied restaurant responsiveness on Facebook during a 90-day period from February to May and ranked casual-dining chains, fast-casual chains and quick-service restaurants by the speed and rate of responses.

Expion broke its study into two groups: casual-dining brands with at least 100,000 Facebook “likes,” and fast-casual or quick-service brands with at least 250,000 “likes.” Only chains’ responses to original wall posts from fans counted toward the brands’ rankings; comments within a post from the company did not factor into results. Expion did not differentiate whether the responses it tracked were answering positive or negative comments from fans.

For quick-service and fast-casual chains, Starbucks Corp. (Nasdaq: SBUX) was the chain that responded faster than any other, with an average response time of 34 minutes. However, it only responded to 20 percent of posts on its wall.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG) responded to the largest percent of its posts, with an 83 percent response rate.

The average response time for fast-casual and quick-service restaurants was 6 hours and 34 minutes, responding to 28 percent of all messages received.

Casual dining restaurants on average answered 32 percent of the posts on their walls, but did so in a slower manner. The average response time was 8 hours and 56 minutes.

Buffalo Wild Wings (Nasdaq: BWLD) had the fastest response time for casual dining restaurants, with an average response time of 2 hours and 25 minutes.

I recently listened to a Hubspot webinar about the future of social media. The webinar confirmed and expanded on points that I have been trying to convey to clients about how much social media drives search engine optimization. At PALO, we have always told our clients that when it comes to websites, the motto “If you build it, they will come” does NOT work. You have to tell people AND search engines that you are there.

It’s archaic to think that as long as your site has the right metatags and key words and you submitted it to the major search engines you should be at the top of search engine results. Today, search engines are crawling social media sites and online interaction and pushing companies that participate in these to the top of the lists. Businesses now have to think about social media optimization.

The importance of likes on various social networks will equal links. The shift from SEO to SMO has been recently backed up by introducing Goolge +1 . This is the new search idea of browsing the website that your friends recommend. Therefore, even if you do not believe in social media, but you do believe in SEO, ranking higher in SEO in the future will require more social engagement.

So what you as a marketer have to do with all of this information? Stop thinking as an advertiser and start thinking as a publisher or a socializer. Stop talking to your customers and interact with them by committing to your inbound strategy.
