AAHH, Valentine’s Day, one day in the middle of winter that people mark on their calendars whether they have a significant other or not. You either hate it or love it but everyone is acutely aware of it. Blame the greeting card companies, chocolate manufacturers and advertisers for showering consumers with the same old song and dance year after year. Whether you buy into it or not, the truth is, this holiday is a lucrative one. Spending for significant others is up this year from $8.7 billion in 2010 to $9.3 billion 2011 and for other family members such as children, parents, ect, consumers will spend $37.9 billion this holiday. Cards, candy and an evening out are the top three things people are spending money on this year.

Advertisers are playing on emotions, as usual, to reach consumers. Some do a good job, while others completely miss the mark. Here are some of the best print advertisements for Valentine’s Day 2011 (and one really bad one).
